Why Caravan & Motorhome Tyres Are Their Own Job

A caravan or motorhome lives a strange life. It might cover 1,500 miles a year on the road, but it sits โ€” fully laden with the awning, the bedding, the gas bottles, the full water tank โ€” on the same four contact patches for forty-eight weeks. Tyres age from UV, ozone and standing load, not just from miles. That's why caravan and motorhome tyres are typically CP-rated (Camping/Pleasure): the stiffer sidewall handles the standing weight without flat-spotting, and the rubber compound is formulated for the use case.

Industry guidance from the Tyre Industry Federation is to replace caravan tyres at five to seven years from the DOT date code on the sidewall, regardless of tread depth. After that the casing is at real risk of sudden sidewall failure under load โ€” and a blowout on the M6 with a caravan behind you is genuinely dangerous. The fitting itself is the easy part. The harder part is being told straight whether your tyres are still safe, and that's the call Simon makes on every caravan job.

Touring caravans:

  • Single-axle โ€” Bailey Phoenix/Discovery/Unicorn, Coachman, Swift Sprite/Challenger, Adria, Lunar, Elddis, Sterling.
  • Twin-axle โ€” Bailey Pegasus, Coachman Laser, Swift Conqueror, Adria Adora, Hobby Premium.

Motorhomes:

Leisure trailers: camping trailers, single/double horseboxes (passenger spec), boat trailers and plant trailers up to a reasonable size. HGV-wheel commercial trailers are outside scope.

Related work: DOT date-code check on every visit, locking wheel nut extraction for compound-stored vans, TPMS service (where fitted to motorhome cab), dynamic balancing on motorhome wheels.

What's Outside Scope

Caravans, motorhomes and leisure trailers โ€” yes. A few categories sit outside.

Yes โ€” covered here
  • Single & twin axle touring caravans
  • Panel-van, coachbuilt & A-class motorhomes
  • Twin-rear-wheel motorhome chassis
  • Leisure trailers (camping, single/double horsebox, boat)
  • Compound, campsite or driveway visits
Outside scope
  • Static caravans on park homes (different trade โ€” site fitter)
  • HGV-wheel commercial trailers
  • Very large American RVs with access constraints โ€” ring to confirm
  • Agricultural / tractor trailers

If you're not sure whether the rig falls inside scope, ring with the model and rough weight โ€” Simon will tell you straight on the call.

Brand Tiers for Caravan & Motorhome

Because caravan and motorhome tyres are replaced for age more than for wear, the case for premium tier is genuinely strong here โ€” you're paying once for five or six years of service, and the failure mode (sidewall blowout under load on a motorway) is the worst kind. Continental Vanco Camper, Michelin Agilis Camping, Pirelli Carrier Camper and Goodyear Cargo G91 are well-proven CP-rated patterns. Mid-range and budget tiers are available if budget rules; Simon will be honest about what's worth it for your specific use case.

Premium

Long-life, quiet, best wet grip โ€” the brands the carmakers fit from the factory.

  • Michelin
  • Continental
  • Pirelli
  • Bridgestone
  • Goodyear
  • Dunlop
  • Hankook
  • Yokohama
  • Toyo
Mid-range

Solid all-rounders for daily drivers and work vans โ€” premium-like performance without the premium price.

  • Falken
  • GT Radial
  • Nexen
  • Avon
  • BF Goodrich
  • Firestone
  • Kumho
  • Uniroyal
  • Sumitomo
  • General Tire
Budget

Lowest-cost legal tyres โ€” short-term keep-you-moving fitments when budget rules the day.

  • Landsail
  • Evergreen
  • Petlas
  • Autogrip
  • Fullrun
  • Ovation
  • Runway
  • Linglong

Pricing isn't published โ€” depends on the spec, the brand and the chassis. Call 07549 676 220 with the DOT code, tyre size and rough postcode for an honest quote.

Areas I Cover for Caravan & Motorhome

Storage compounds and campsites tend to cluster around the M6, M61 and M62 corridors โ€” Rivington, Charnock Richard, Botany Bay, the Trough of Bowland fringe, Delamere Forest, Cheshire's lakeland. From the WN5 Wigan base, most caravan and motorhome jobs across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire are reachable within the hour for emergencies, and bookable on a day's notice for planned full-set replacements.

Two town hubs hold the full coverage detail by postcode and suburb:

Beyond the home boroughs (Preston, Chorley, Skelmersdale, Liverpool, Warrington, Chester, Stockport, the M53/M56/M62 corridors, the Lake District fringe), Simon will quote on the call with a realistic ETA. Always confirm compound access hours when you ring.

FAQs โ€” Caravan & Motorhome Tyres

Why are caravan and motorhome tyres different?

Caravans and motorhomes spend most of their lives parked, often fully laden, sitting on the same patch of tyre for weeks at a time. Tyres age from UV, ozone and standing load โ€” not just miles. That's why caravan tyres are typically marked CP (Camping/Pleasure) with a stiffer sidewall, and why age matters as much as tread depth.

Can you fit at a storage compound or on a CL/CC site?

Yes โ€” that's the most common job. Simon comes to the compound with the replacement tyres, fits them on the pitch, takes the old tyres away for legal disposal. Just confirm vehicle access when you ring.

How old is too old for a caravan tyre?

Industry guidance is 5โ€“7 years from the DOT date code on the sidewall, regardless of tread depth. The DOT code is a four-digit number โ€” first two digits are the week, second two are the year. After about 7 years the rubber compound is hardened and the casing is at risk of sudden sidewall failure under load.

Do you fit motorhome tyres on coachbuilts and A-class?

Yes โ€” Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter and Iveco Daily chassis (the basis for most UK motorhomes), plus VW Crafter-based A-class motorhomes. Twin-rear-wheel motorhomes (Sprinter 519, Iveco Daily dually) are fitted regularly.

What about twin-axle caravans?

Yes. Twin-axle Bailey, Coachman, Swift, Adria, Hobby and similar โ€” Simon will work through all four tyres if needed. Best practice is replacing as an axle pair so diameters match.

Can you do trailer tyres (boat trailers, plant trailers, horse boxes)?

Yes for passenger-style trailers (camping trailers, single/double horseboxes, leisure boats). Heavier commercial-spec trailers with HGV wheels and tyres are outside scope โ€” those need a commercial fleet specialist.

Will you replace all four/six tyres as a set?

Yes โ€” full sets are common on caravans and motorhomes given the age-driven replacement cycle. Replacing all wheels in one visit makes sense when they were all fitted at the same time originally.

What about car, van, 4x4 or EV tyres?

Each has its own page โ€” passenger cars on the car tyres page, vans on the van tyres page, 4x4s/SUVs on the 4x4 and SUV page, and electric or hybrid cars on the EV/hybrid page.
