Mobile Puncture Repair & Tyre Repair - BS AU 159f Inside-Tyre, 24/7
Slow puncture? Nail in the tread? I'm Simon, owner-operator at Breakdown Man โ based in WN5 Wigan, covering the North West. Repairs done to British Standard BS AU 159f โ the tyre comes off the rim and the damage is patched from the inside, not plugged from the outside. Quote on the call, no call-out fee. 07549 676 220.
What a Proper Puncture Repair Looks Like
A safe puncture repair has to come from inside the tyre. The tyre comes off the rim, the casing is inspected, the damage is plugged from the inside and patched over the inner liner. That's what BS AU 159f โ the British Standard for permanent passenger-car tyre repairs โ requires, and it's what TyreSafe (the UK's road-safety charity for tyres) recommends as the only repair you should accept on a tyre that's staying on the car.
What's not a proper repair: the boot-of-the-car 'tyre repair kit', the can of foam sealant, or any external plug fitted without removing the tyre from the rim. Those work to limp a few miles to a workshop. They are not a permanent fix, and a tyre that's been sealed externally still needs an inside-the-tyre repair before it goes back into long-term service.
A BS AU 159f repair, done properly, lasts the rest of the tyre's safe life. The tread still wears at the same rate as the other tyres on the axle; the sidewall ages no faster than it would have done; the patch is bonded to the inner liner and isn't going anywhere.
How a Mobile Puncture Repair Works
- Ring with the basics. Reg, tyre size, where the car is, and what you've noticed โ slow leak, complete flat, nail still in the tread.
- Quote on the call. Simon prices the repair (and the worst-case 'unrepairable' replacement) up front so you know either way.
- On site, wheel off. Jacked, wheel removed, taken to the van.
- Tyre off the rim. Mounted on the machine, broken bead, peeled off the rim โ the only way to inspect the inner liner properly.
- Casing inspection. Damage is checked for size, location, depth and any internal evidence of run-flat damage. If it's repairable to BS AU 159f, the repair goes ahead. If it's not, you're told before any new tyre comes off the van.
- Inside-the-tyre patch-and-plug. The hole is reamed, the inner liner is buffed clean around the puncture, the combined plug-and-patch unit is bonded in from the inside.
- TPMS service kit. Every TPMS-equipped tyre that comes off the rim is supposed to get a fresh rubber grommet, valve core and cap. Done at the same time.
- Refit, balance, torque. Tyre back on the rim, balanced on the cone, refitted to the car, torqued to spec, TPMS warning reset.
Most car and van repairs are done in 20โ30 minutes once Simon's on site. Caravans and motorhomes vary depending on jacking points and access.
When a Puncture Can't Be Repaired
Honest answer: not every puncture is repairable. The BS AU 159f standard sets specific limits on what's safe โ anything outside those limits has to be a replacement. The common 'no' situations:
- Sidewall damage. Anything outside the central tread area cannot be repaired. The sidewall flexes constantly under load and a patch won't hold.
- Damage within 25mm of the bead. Same reason โ too close to the high-flex shoulder zone.
- Holes bigger than 6mm in the tread. Beyond the standard's repairable size limit.
- Driven on flat. Even a short distance under-inflated can cook the sidewall internally โ invisible from the outside but fatal to the casing.
- Run-flat tyres. Most RFT manufacturers don't authorise repairs (see FAQ).
- Multiple punctures close together or evidence of internal casing damage on inspection.
In any of those cases, the right answer is a replacement tyre โ not a 'try it and see' repair that fails at 50 mph on the motorway. Simon will tell you which it is when the tyre comes off the rim, and price the replacement on the spot.

FAQs โ Mobile Puncture Repair
What is BS AU 159f?
BS AU 159f is the British Standard for permanent repairs to passenger-car tyres. It defines what counts as a 'safe' repair: the tyre comes off the rim, the inner liner is inspected, the puncture is plugged from the inside and patched over the inner liner, and the repair is restricted to the central tread area within strict size limits. External 'string' or 'mushroom' plugs fitted without removing the tyre do not meet the standard. TyreSafe โ the UK road-safety charity for tyres โ recommends BS AU 159f as the only repair you should accept on a tyre that's going to stay on the car.
Are all punctures repairable?
No. Sidewall damage, anything within 25mm of the bead, anything bigger than a 6mm hole in the tread, anything that's been driven on flat for any distance, and tyres with internal damage to the casing โ those are replacements, not repairs. I'll tell you which it is when I take the tyre off the rim and have a look. If it's a repair, the price is materially smaller than a new tyre, and you keep the matched tread depth across the axle.
How long does a puncture repair take?
Most car and van punctures take 20โ30 minutes once I'm on site โ that's the wheel off, tyre off the rim, inspection, repair, refit, balance and back on the car. Caravans and motorhomes vary depending on jacking points and access.
Can I keep driving on a slow puncture?
Not for long. Driving under-inflated heats the sidewall up and can cause hidden internal damage that turns a repairable puncture into a replacement. If the pressure's dropping faster than you can keep up with a foot pump, ring before you keep driving โ same-day or out-of-hours, depending on what time you spot it.
Will the repair affect my insurance?
A BS AU 159f repair is a recognised industry-standard repair. It does not affect roadworthiness or pass a tyre into 'modified' territory. If you're concerned about a specific policy clause, ring your insurer with the standard reference (BS AU 159f) โ that's the language they'll know.
What if there's a slow leak around the rim or the valve, not the tread?
Different fixes for each. Rim-leak (corrosion or muck on the bead seat) gets cleaned and resealed. Valve-leak gets a new rubber valve โ those perish over time, especially on older alloys. Both are mobile-fitting jobs, often quicker than a tread repair.
Can you do TPMS at the same time as a puncture repair?
Yes โ and you should. Every TPMS-equipped tyre that comes off the rim is supposed to get a fresh service kit (rubber grommet, valve core, cap). The van carries the common kits, so the puncture repair, TPMS service and warning-light reset can all happen in one visit.
What about run-flat tyres?
Generally no. Most run-flat (RFT) manufacturers don't authorise repairs because the reinforced sidewall hides damage you can't reliably inspect. If you've driven a run-flat in 'flat' mode any distance at speed, the tyre's been compromised โ replacement is the safe call. I'll check on the spot and tell you what the manufacturer's policy is for that tyre.
How long does a properly-done repair last?
For the rest of the tyre's safe life โ the repair isn't the limiting factor. A BS AU 159f patch-and-plug bonded to the inner liner is permanent. Tread depth still wears at the same rate as the rest of the tyre, and the tyre's still got the same age-related sidewall life ahead of it.
Do you do motorbike, HGV or tractor puncture repairs?
No โ cars, vans, 4x4s, caravans, motorhomes and EVs/hybrids only. Motorbike, HGV/lorry and agricultural tyres need different machinery and different repair standards.
