What Wheel Balancing Actually Is
A wheel is only balanced if its weight is even all the way around. Tyres and rims aren't perfect โ there's always a slightly heavier spot somewhere in the construction. Left alone, that heavy spot throws the wheel out of true once it's spinning fast enough, and you feel it through the steering or the seat.
Balancing fixes it. The wheel is taken off the car, spun on a balancer that measures exactly where the heavy spot sits, and a small lead or adhesive weight is added to the rim on the opposite side to cancel it out. Done properly, the wheel runs smooth at every speed โ no wobble, no vibration, no premature shoulder wear from a tyre that's been hammering the road at 70 mph for years.
Out-of-balance wheels do not get better on their own. They tend to get worse โ the heavy spot wears unevenly, which makes the imbalance worse, which makes the vibration worse. If you've started noticing it, it's worth ringing.
Symptoms That Mean Balance โ and Symptoms That Don't
It's worth being honest about this on the call so I don't make a wasted journey. Mobile balancing fixes balance โ it does not fix tracking, alignment, suspension or braking faults. The pattern roughly looks like this:

What's the difference between balancing, tracking and alignment?
Wheel balancing fixes vibration from a heavy spot in the tyre/rim โ small lead or adhesive weights are added to the rim until the wheel spins true. Tracking (sometimes called 'toe alignment') sets the front wheels parallel to each other so they don't scrub. Four-wheel alignment is the full geometry job โ toe, camber and caster on all four corners, set with a laser rig in a workshop bay. I do balancing on the van. I cannot do laser-rig tracking or four-wheel alignment mobile โ that's a garage job.
How do I know if it's a balancing issue?
Classic signs: steering wheel wobble that builds up between 50 and 70 mph and fades at higher or lower speed; vibration through the seat at motorway speed; one corner of the car humming louder than the others. Pull-to-one-side at any speed is usually tracking, not balance. Vibration only under braking is usually warped discs, not balance. Tell me what you're feeling on the call and I'll tell you whether mobile balancing is the right job before I set off.
Do you do all four wheels or only the wobbly one?
I'll balance every wheel that's contributing to the symptom โ usually that's two (an axle pair) or all four. Single-wheel rebalances are common after a puncture repair or a tyre swap where only one wheel's been off. Per-wheel pricing keeps it fair.
Can you balance wheels with alloy rims and no clip-on weight lip?
Yes โ I use adhesive stick-on weights for alloys without a clip lip (most modern alloys). For rims that take clip-on weights I carry those too. I'll fit whichever is appropriate for your rim โ there are no good shortcuts on this.
Can you do laser four-wheel alignment mobile?
No โ and don't trust anyone who says they can. Four-wheel laser alignment needs a level workshop bay, calibrated targets on each wheel and a known reference plane. That's a garage job. If the car pulls to one side, the tyres are scrubbing on the inside or outside shoulder, or the steering is offset, you need a workshop, not mobile balancing. I'll say so honestly when you ring.
What about caravans and motorhomes?
Yes โ caravan and motorhome wheels balance fine on the machine. Caravans on storage compounds welcome.
How long does mobile wheel balancing take?
Allow 15 minutes per wheel from the car to the balancer and back, plus jacking time. A full four-wheel rebalance on a car or van is typically under an hour on site.
