Mobile Run Flat Tyre Fitting & Repair - RFT, ZP, SSR, EMT at Your Driveway

BMW, Mini, Mercedes or any factory run-flat car? I'm Simon, owner-operator at Breakdown Man, based in WN5 Wigan, covering the North West. I bring the proper machine for stiffer run-flat sidewalls โ€” the most common reason a kerbside fit gets turned down on arrival elsewhere. Fresh TPMS service kit included. Honest advice when a run-flat is past repair, not a bodge. Quote on the call, no call-out fee. 07549 676 220.

What a Run-Flat Actually Is

A run-flat is a tyre with a reinforced sidewall stiff enough to support the weight of the car after a complete loss of pressure. The standard manufacturer claim is roughly 50 miles at 50 mph with zero psi โ€” enough to get off a motorway, off a hard shoulder, or home from the supermarket without changing a wheel at the kerb.

Every major tyre maker brands their version slightly differently โ€” same idea, different sidewall markings:

  • RFT โ€” Bridgestone (and used as a generic shorthand industry-wide)
  • ZP / Zero Pressure โ€” Michelin
  • SSR โ€” Continental (Self-Supporting Run-flat)
  • EMT โ€” Goodyear (Extended Mobility Technology)
  • RFT / Run Flat โ€” Pirelli

If your sidewall is marked with any of those, the car was designed around the stiffer ride and likely has no spare wheel in the boot โ€” just a small repair-foam kit you should ignore in favour of a proper mobile fit.

Why Fitting a Run-Flat is a Different Job

The same stiff sidewall that lets the tyre carry the car at zero pressure also makes the tyre harder to seat on the rim during fitting. A standard mobile machine โ€” designed around a soft passenger-car sidewall โ€” can struggle to break the bead cleanly and can damage the reinforced sidewall in the process. This is the most common reason a mobile fitter turns up and refuses the job once they see what's on the car.

The van's machine is rated for run-flat sidewalls: the right bead-pressing arm, a properly clamped wheel, controlled lubrication on the bead seat so nothing tears. The fit takes longer than a standard tyre โ€” usually 15โ€“20 minutes longer per wheel โ€” but it's done properly and the tyre is safe to inflate to spec without forcing it onto the rim.

If you've had a run-flat fitting refused before โ€” or worse, half-done and walked away from โ€” you don't have to bring the car to a workshop. Ring Simon, tell him the tyre size, and the right kit comes to you.

Repairs vs Replacement on Run-Flats

Honest answer that some fitters won't give you: most run-flat manufacturers do not authorise repairs. Bridgestone, Michelin and Pirelli all state in their fitter literature that a run-flat driven in 'flat' mode any distance at speed is to be replaced, not repaired โ€” the reinforced sidewall hides internal damage that can't be reliably inspected from the outside.

Simon will check the manufacturer's specific policy for the tyre on your car when he arrives. If a repair is authorised (a tiny number of cases โ€” fresh nail in the central tread, no flat-running, no sidewall damage), the standard BS AU 159f inside-the-tyre repair applies. If it's not authorised, the answer is replacement, and he'll quote the new tyre on the spot. You will not be sold a repair the manufacturer says shouldn't happen โ€” that's the kind of thing that fails at 60 mph six months later.

FAQs โ€” Run-Flat Tyre Fitting

What's a run-flat tyre and how is it different to a normal tyre?

A run-flat tyre has a heavily reinforced sidewall that can hold the car's weight for a limited distance after losing all pressure โ€” typically 50 miles at 50 mph. That lets you drive on to safety after a puncture without changing the wheel at the kerb. The trade-off is a stiffer ride, a higher purchase price, and a fitting process that needs the proper machine to seat the bead cleanly without damaging the sidewall.

How do I know if my car has run-flats?

Most BMWs, Minis and some Mercedes models are factory-fitted with run-flats. The sidewall is marked: RFT (Bridgestone, generic), ZP / Zero Pressure (Michelin), SSR (Continental), EMT (Goodyear) or RFT / Run Flat (Pirelli). Some Audi and Lexus models use them too. If your car has direct TPMS, no spare wheel, and only a small repair kit in the boot, you almost certainly have run-flats.

Can a run-flat be repaired?

Generally no. Most run-flat manufacturers โ€” including Bridgestone, Pirelli and Michelin โ€” do not authorise repairs because the reinforced sidewall hides damage you can't reliably inspect. If you've driven any distance flat at any speed, the sidewall has compressed and almost certainly suffered internal damage. The honest answer is replacement. I'll check the manufacturer's specific policy for the tyre on your car when I arrive, and will not bodge a repair on a tyre the maker says shouldn't be repaired.

Can I swap my run-flats for normal tyres?

Yes, you can โ€” but read this first. Swapping to non-run-flats means: no get-you-home capability after a puncture (you'll need a spare or a recovery callout), the car's suspension was tuned for the stiffer run-flat sidewall so the ride will feel softer (some people prefer that), and you must keep all four corners matched โ€” never mix run-flats and standard tyres on the same axle or car. I'll fit standard tyres if that's what you want.

Do you have a machine that can fit run-flats?

Yes. The van's tyre machine is rated for the stiffer sidewall and has the right bead-pressing arm to seat a run-flat onto the rim without forcing it. Not all mobile fitters carry one โ€” it's the most common reason a job gets turned down on arrival. Tell me the tyre size on the call and I'll confirm the right inflation/seating procedure for your specific tyre.

Do I need to do TPMS at the same time?

Almost always yes โ€” run-flat-equipped cars are almost all on direct TPMS, and the sensor comes off with the tyre. Fresh service kit (rubber grommet, valve core, cap) goes on with every fit as standard. If the sensor itself is dead, I can replace it on the same visit.

What does run-flat fitting cost?

Quote on the call. Run-flat tyres themselves are usually 25โ€“40% more expensive than equivalent standard tyres โ€” that's manufacturer pricing, not a fitter markup. The fitting price reflects the extra time on the machine. Ring with the size on the sidewall and I'll quote on the spot.

Do you fit run-flats on motorbikes or HGVs?

No โ€” cars, vans, 4x4s, caravans, motorhomes and EVs/hybrids only. Motorbike and HGV run-flats (where they exist) use different machinery.
