What "Mid-Range" Actually Means
The mid-range tier is where most British family cars and work vans should be living. Premium-tier rubber is a genuine step up on long-mileage and performance vehicles, but the gap to mid-range narrows year on year, and on a 10โ15,000-mile-a-year family car the extra spend often doesn't earn back its tread life. Mid-range brands inherit a lot of the engineering work from their premium parents โ Falken belongs to Sumitomo, BF Goodrich and Uniroyal sit under Michelin, Firestone is under Bridgestone, General Tire under Continental โ so the technology cascades down even if the badge changes. The result is consistent wet performance, sensible tread life, and a price point that suits the use case.
Simon's most-fitted tier across Bolton and Wigan, by a long way. If your car is a Focus, an Astra, a Qashqai, a 3-series doing the daily commute, a workhorse Sprinter or Transit โ this is the section to ring about.
The Mid-Range Brands We Supply
Each entry is a neutral, factual note. Pricing isn't on the page โ sizes vary, supply shifts, and Simon would rather give you a number that's actually correct on the call.
- Falken
- Owned by Sumitomo. The Azenis range has built a strong reputation at UHP for sharp dry handling without the premium-tier price; the Sincera and Ziex ranges cover everyday touring and SUV fitments.
- GT Radial
- Singapore-headquartered manufacturer with a reliable daily-driver record across the Champiro and Maxmiler ranges. A workhorse mid-range fitment on family cars and vans.
- Nexen
- Korean brand with broad distribution across the UK. N'Fera covers passenger-car and performance fitments; Roadian crosses into SUV and light-truck use; van-specific patterns are well-supplied.
- Avon
- British heritage brand, now part of Goodyear, manufactured in Wiltshire. ZV7 and ZX7 are common touring fitments; the brand's wet-grip behaviour is consistently solid in independent tests.
- BF Goodrich
- American brand under Michelin's umbrella. Best-known for the All-Terrain T/A KO2 โ the off-road benchmark for 4x4s and pickups โ and a range of road tyres engineered with the same compound research as the parent.
- Firestone
- Owned by Bridgestone and engineered as a distinct line. Roadhawk and Multihawk cover everyday touring and all-season; Vanhawk is the light-commercial fitment.
- Kumho
- Korean manufacturer with strong UK distribution. Ecsta is the performance line; Ecowing covers efficiency-focused touring; Crugen and Road Venture cross into SUV and 4x4 sizes.
- Uniroyal
- Owned by Continental and engineered as the rain-grip specialist. The RainSport and RainExpert ranges sit a tier below Continental in pricing but lean heavily on the same wet-weather research.
- Sumitomo
- Japanese parent of Falken. The HTR series is the touring staple; the Encounter range covers SUVs. Less brand-visible than Falken in the UK but engineered from the same factories.
- General Tire
- Owned by Continental and focused on 4x4/SUV and family-car ranges. Grabber covers AT and HT all-terrain; Altimax is the touring and all-season range.
Not Sure Which Tier You Need?
The mid-range tier suits drivers doing real annual mileage in everyday cars and vans. If the car's a long-haul commuter on serious motorway hours, a performance fitment, an EV with the kerb-weight penalty or a prestige saloon, the premium tier earns its keep. If the car's a low-mileage second runabout or being run to MOT-and-sell, the budget tier is honest about its short-term role. Ring Simon and he'll talk through your situation.
- Premium tyres โ Michelin, Continental, Pirelli and the rest. OE-grade rubber for long-mileage, performance and EV cars.
- Budget tyres โ Landsail, Evergreen, Petlas and others. Lowest legal-tyre cost for short-term fitments.
